Passaic
Passaic County Custom is an exploration into how craft objects can be created in digital space. This project experimented with a mass customization model where customers all over the world would customize designs on her bags over the Internet. The customer uploads images and patterns that are printed onto fabric and laser etched into leather. Using digital fabrication techniques, customization can be added without altering the supply chain.
Archaic craft techniques using leather and oilcloth are combined with the new technologies of laser cutting and digital textile printing. The resulting objects use technology to create consumer objects that are truly bespoke, and build to last. Mass customization opens up a space where commodities can regain meaning in the lives of consumers. Instead of disposable objects, tied to trends, the customer is offered the option of creating something with deep personal value, and heirloom in the digital age.
