I designed and prototyped the Vega Edge wearable cycling light in the Social Body Lab alongside Kate Hartman and Jackson McConnel in collaboration with fashion designer Angella Mackey. Vega Edge was successfully funded on Kickstarter on March 31, 2014 at $33 987, and the units shipped August, 2014.
Being seen at night is a huge concern for cyclists. But danger arises when lights are stolen, or left at home, leaving the rider vulnerable. While there are several lights on the market that are worn on the body their aesthetic is more suited to deer hunting than bar hopping. These modular lights are designed to be low pro le, subtle and fashionable.
At the Social Body Lab, we researched and developed a cycling light that is easy to use and versatile. Funded by FedDev, we explored the product needs of Angella Mackey’s brand Vega and prototyped a modular solution. Made with laser-cut leather, it snaps securely to your clothes using four strong magnets. It has a thin strip of retro-reflective fabric integrated into the design for added visibility. The Edge is de- signed to look good even when the lights are off—a design philosophy that is crucial for any wearable product. You can wear it discreetly by day or brightly at night on your coat, cardigan, hood, scarf, handbag, collar, pocket, belt, or wherever you’d like a touch of light.
